Will New Wisconsin Merit Scholarships Make College More Affordable?

Wisconsin Merit ScholarshipsA Proposed Merit Scholarship Program in Wisconsin has the Potential to Save Students Thousands on College.

Wisconsin merit scholarships have been offered to graduating high school students across the state for years. Parents who come to us asking about UW-Madison financial aid and UW-Milwaukee scholarships have a lot of questions about what their families qualify for when they've been academically, athletically and artistically successful.

While we've always been able to help Wisconsin students find the best scholarships, grants and financial aid they qualify for, a new program has been proposed by state lawmakers that could change the game completely. Affording college could be even more achievable for students who will be graduating in 3 to 5 years if a new program is approved.

Merit Based Scholarships in WisconsinNew 2017 Wisconsin Merit Scholarship Proposed by State Lawmakers

In May 2017, State Treasurer Matt Adamczyk introduced a new merit-based scholarship for University of Wisconsin students. This program would be funded by selling 70,000 acres of swamp land in Northern Wisconsin and has the potential to generate $80 million, $5 million of which would be used every year to help talented Wisconsin students attend college at an estimated $5000 per student.

While the new merit scholarship program has been criticized for proposing to deplete a conservation fund, it has also gained a lot of positive attention for its initiative to keep the state's smartest, most creative and most athletic students from leaving. Popular schools like the University of Wisconsin-Madison already offers a merit-based scholarship, but the financial aid available is not as high as other competing schools in and, most importantly, out of state.
