Do I Qualify for Financial Aid?
Wisconsin Financial Aid Experts Discuss Qualifying for Student Loans, Grants and Scholarships
Most local students WILL QUALIFY for some type of college financial assistance. Whether college funding comes in the form of grants and scholarships which don’t need to be paid back, or student loans which do, depends on a wide variety of factors.
Most students are able to use a combination of grants, scholarships, loans and savings plans to pay for college.
Financial aid eligibility for state-funded schools include several prerequisites:
- Students must be a resident of the State of Wisconsin
- A high school diploma or GED is required
- Proof of enrollment in an undergraduate or certificate program from a public or private non-profit college or university based in the state
Eligibility for need-based funding, such as the Wisconsin Tuition Grant, the Wisconsin Minority Undergraduate Retention Grant or the Wisconsin Indian (Native American) Student Assistance Grant is derived from data from the student’s FAFSA application. To be eligible for FAFSA in Wisconsin, students who are required to register for Selective Service must do so.
Any student who is on the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development Child Support Lien Docket for delinquent child care will be deemed ineligible for state-funded financial aid unless they are on an approved college funding payment plan.
Will a Drug Conviction Make Me Ineligible for Student Aid?
Students who have been convicted of drug possession or drug trafficking might not be eligible for state and federal student aid. Financial aid eligibility in this case may depend on the number of convictions and how recently the drug offense(s) occurred.
Students are still encouraged to apply, as other forms of student aid may be available.
